Second year of studies

The second year of studies consists of a Master’s degree programme from Heriot-Watt University. You can choose either Petroleum Engineering or Reservoir Evaluation and Management.

MSc Petroleum Engineering

The programme equips students with the knowledge and skills to understand and solve the most complex upstream problems in today's petroleum industry.

MSc Reservoir Evaluation and Management

The programme teaches students how to build predictive models of hydrocarbon reservoir behaviour.

Career opportunities

Graduates go on to work for major oil and gas companies, service companies as well as smaller consultancies in petroleum engineering. The programme provides a springboard to pursue a career in research.

  • A Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent in petroleum engineering, geology, physics, mathematics or any other relevant subject
  • Upper intermediate (B2) level of English
  • Upper intermediate (B2) level of Russian

There are no scholarships available for non-Russian citizens to cover HWU tuition fees

The test takes 100 minutes. You need to answer at least 25 questions out of 50 correctly.

Studying our MSc programmes in Tomsk, Russia is not significantly different from studying at the main campus of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, UK. The contents of the programmes are identical. We follow the same standards of teaching and assessing students’ results.

Graduates of the paired degree programme receive two MSc degrees from both Tomsk Polytechnic University and Heriot-Watt University. The Heriot-Watt diploma does not state that you have completed your education in Russia.

You can study a handful of MSc programmes online, including the Petroleum Engineering course. To find out more about your options, the application process, intake deadlines, tuition fees, and other issues related to online learning, please visit the Heriot-Watt Online website.

We process applications from November to the end of July each year. You can apply online, take an English test, and have an interview with us at any time during this period. However, those who are required to get a student visa to study in Russia are strongly encouraged to finish their application process at least two months before we close applications, to allow some time to receive a student visa.

There are Russian government scholarships to cover Tomsk Polytechnic University tuition fees, please visit the Study in Russia website. However, those scholarships do not cover Heriot-Watt University tuition fees, which occur during the second year of studies.

There is no stipend or monthly allowance. Make sure to budget funds sufficient to cover living expenses. Your minimal monthly expenses are estimated to be around 15 000 RUB.

Yes, we provide every student with a decent accommodation conveniently located within easy reach of the teaching building, groceries, cafes, and sports facilities. You will share a room for two with a classmate. The room has an en-suite bathroom, access to the internet, as well as a weekly cleaning service.
